Kuantan: Two young men, one of whom is already facing a separate charge for dangerous motorcycle riding, have pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here to intentionally hurting a policeman who was on duty.

The Charges Explained

Assaulting an Officer

Muhammad Syarif Zawahid and Muhammad Syafiq Farhan Mohd Norizam, both 22, were jointly charged under Section 332 of the Penal Code. This serious charge relates to allegedly causing injury to a police officer while he was performing his duties. If convicted, they could face a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both.

The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 9pm on March 2, at Jalan Kuantan-Sungai Lembing, opposite the Masjid Tengku Ampuan Afzan intersection. Magistrate Tengku Eliana Tuan Kamaruzaman set bail at RM3,000 with one surety for each accused. The case will be mentioned again on April 20.

Dangerous Motorcycle Riding

In a separate courtroom earlier, Muhammad Syarif Zawahid, who is currently unemployed, faced an additional charge that will resonate with many riders – reckless and dangerous riding. He is accused of performing dangerous manoeuvres on a public road, including running a red light and zig-zagging. These actions are a big no-no and put everyone at risk!

This offence, also committed at 9pm on March 2 in front of the Masjid Tengku Ampuan Afzan intersection, falls under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The penalties for such an offence are stiff: up to five years in jail, a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000, and a minimum five-year driving ban. Talk about heavy consequences for dangerous stunts!

Magistrate Wahidah Zainal Abidin granted Syarif bail at RM3,000 for this charge, with the case mention set for April 15.

Riding recklessly on public roads not only endangers the rider but also innocent road users. The law is clear on the severe penalties for such actions, including substantial fines and long driving bans.

It's a stark reminder for all Malaysian riders: ride safe, ride smart, and always respect the law and other road users. Keep those wheels on the ground and lights green, guys!
