Driving institutes can now have training circuits in multi-storey buildings, under new JPJ guidelines

Heads Up, Riders! JPJ Now Allows Multi-Storey Driving Circuits – Even on Rooftops!

Listen up, aspiring bikers and drivers! The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has just rolled out some game-changing new guidelines for driving institutes (IMs) that could make getting your lesen a whole lot easier, especially if you're in the city. The coolest part? Training circuits can now be set up in warehouses, commercial spaces, and get this – even on the rooftops of multi-storey buildings!

Solving Urban Land Constraints, Malaysian Style

According to JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, this innovative initiative is a smart move to utilise unused land, buildings, or large warehouses. And crucially for us bikers, these facilities aren't just for cars (Class D) but also for motorcycles (Class B). This means easier access for those looking to get their lesen motor!

"The new guidelines will allow unused land, buildings, or large warehouses to be converted into driving institutes. Such facilities will be limited to Class D and B vehicles – meaning cars and motorcycles!"

For training circuits built in multi-storey buildings or on rooftops, safety is paramount. Datuk Aedy Fadly stressed that structures must be strong and meet all specified standards. This ensures high levels of safety for everyone – candidates, instructors, and the public – while providing a conducive and secure learning environment. So, imagine practicing your 'figure of 8' or 'slant' for your B2/B full license high above the bustling city streets!

More Flexibility, More Choices for Riders

Beyond innovative locations, JPJ's new guidelines also bring other beneficial changes:

  • No more minimum distance: The requirement for a minimum distance between driving institutes has been removed. This could mean more choices and competition in a given area.
  • No minimum land size: For new developments, the minimum land size rule is also gone. JPJ will now assess applications based on the capacity and readiness of existing institutes in the area.
  • No more geographic zones: Previously, driving institutes were restricted to accepting candidates from specific geographical zones. Now, you can enrol at any driving institute across the country! This is super convenient, especially for those working far from home or who prefer to return to their hometowns for training.

These updates are developed in line with the Motor Vehicles (Driving Schools) Rules 1992 and the Road Transport Act 1987. The goal is clear: to strengthen and modernise the driving institute industry for everyone's benefit.

So, for all you eager future riders and drivers out there, this is certainly exciting news! More options, greater accessibility, and perhaps no more long journeys to distant training circuits. Get ready, Malaysia – getting your license might just involve a trip to a 'rooftop' driving school!
